Authors should expect that editors could be booked out several months. Copyediting can take weeks, depending on the length of the work and other projects already booked, so bear that in mind when considering your timeline for editing.
Need to know more about different types of editing, including developmental editing? Visit this helpful Northwest Editors Guild page.
Every project fee is unique, but you can consult the Northwest Editors Guild rate chart for an idea of what to expect.
Once you have contacted me with the basics about your manuscript and editing goals, you will send me a middle chapter of your work for assessment. You will then receive a short edit with comments and an estimate of time and cost for the entire manuscript.
A 60,000 word bird book that required a fair amount of trimming and rewriting might have a page per hour rate of only 4 or 5 and cost $2750. But another book of the same word count that didn't require as much time and work might cost $2000 or even less. That's where the sample edit is useful for both parties. I can get a feel for what exactly your book needs and give you an estimate of the cost and time.
If we agree to work together, we will sign a contract outlining the scope of work, deadlines for completion, and payment schedule. A 50% down payment is required before work is begun, and the final payment is due before edited files are returned.
Manuscripts must be submitted in Microsoft Word format (.doc or .docx). Mac users should use Word for Mac, as converting Pages to Word will introduce errors and become problematic. During the edit, changes and comments will be added using Word's Track Changes feature. Proofreading is done electronically in PDF or Word format, or on hard copy. E-book formatting and indexing are not available services.
